Sometime you run across tools and you actually get to hold a piece of history. This is a 130-150 year old Tenon Plane use to tune up furniture tenons before power tool made them obsolete. The best part is that it still works!
I was out antiquing with my wife and I go usually looking for tools. 90% of the time it’s a total bust because the tools one are total crap, two they’re grossly overpriced and three, half the time I don’t need them.
But this time it was a little bit different. I stumbled across a beautiful antique tenon plane for only $8. For being well over 100 years old. The plane was in excellent condition with almost no Dings, marks, scratches, splits or anything else. The blade was reasonably sharp to the touch and the wedge was in really good condition too. There were few things, however, from a adjusting hammer.
I was excited to bring it home and give it a try. These planes were used extensively in making fine furniture. In the late 1800s and very early 1900s. The cabinet maker would cut the shoulders and then come back and cut the face of the tenon. Those would be fairly rough cuts and the tenant faces would they have quite a few saw marks on them. The tenon plane would Be used to. Straighten up the faces, smooth them, and then tweak them so they slid Into the mortises.
This plane, directly out of the bag was a great worker. It cut through figure dash without too much trouble Before it even got sharpened. I decided this is definitely a keeper plane because Well, I may not use it very often. It’s one of those things that I can have around and actually hold a piece of history. I hope you have the opportunity to buy a piece of history like I have and potentially use it. Even if you don’t use it every day.
Hope you got something out of this and if you did, do me a favor, hit like and subscribe. I’d appreciate that a lot.
Thanks for reading and until next time Good Making!
