Don’t buy these screwdrivers. I’m not one to bang on companies for their products unless they’re really horrible. And these screwdrivers I’m going to show you are truly horrible.
Atlanta GA and Highland Woodworking
I traveled to Atlanta to see my brother and while there I stopped in at Highland Woodworking. Highland Woodworking is a candy store for woodworkers. It is an outstanding place to buy tools and heck just a great place to visit. While I was at the counter making a purchase I noticed on the rack a set of Perfect Pattern screwdrivers. The Perfect Pattern screwdriver was patented in 1903 by a fellow named W.S. Ward and sold by H.D. Smith and Company. These are heavy duty screwdrivers that were used by mechanics and tool engineers at the beginning of the last century. This pattern could also be found in a German Tanker’s tool kit during WWII. Anyway, I got excited to see them and on a notional buy tossed them in the bag.
Michigan and Home
I stashed them in the truck and then headed back to Michigan. When I got home it actually looked at the screwdrivers. I was terribly disappointed. While I expected the quality to be subpar because they’re probably made in Pakistan or India, I did not expect the screwdrivers to be as bad as they turned out.
If you go out today and buy a set of screwdrivers normally you’ll get 1/4 inch tip, a 3/8 inch tip, and a 1/2 half inch tip. Each of these screwdrivers will have a shaft that is proportioned to the tip meeting that the smaller tip will have a slim diameter shaft and the larger tip will have a larger diameter shaft.
The Tools
These screwdrivers have the same shaft size for all. As a matter of fact the tips also are identical. Well not actually identical because they’re so poorly grounded but they’re close. So really, all I bought was a large screwdriver in four different lengths.
Additionally, the screwdriver shafts are poorly ground with flat spots and continual grind marks along the length. The handles are in similar sad shape with flat spots from the sanders and many sanding scratches. Additionally the rivets are not sanded flush and catch the skin on your hand.
While I’ve bought bad tools throughout my woodworking career these have to be the absolute worst. So if you happen to be at Highland Woodworking and you see these things, point them out to the manager and tell him he needs to pull them off the shelf because they are not the quality that anyone should expect from a retailer like highland or working.
Hope you got something out of this and if you did, do me a favor, hit like and subscribe. I’d appreciate that a lot.
Thanks for reading and until next time Good Making!
